GRIME IS ON THE RISE ACCORDING TO THE BPI
There is no doubt this year has certainly been the year for Urban Music. With the rise of artists such as Stormzy, Skepta, Tinie Tempah, JHus, Ray BLK, Nadia Rose and many more it’s no wonder the scene is doing so well In the mainstream. The BPI has released a report that has confirmed what we have already known which is that Grime in on the rise.
The annual report which was published on June 17th looks at figures of Grime album and single sales compared to last year as well as the impact and rise of Grime artists. Between last year and now has shown various Grime artists coming to mainstream prominence with the likes of Skepta who has celebrated success in the past year. The BBK MC took home the 2016 Mercury Prize for Konnichiwa, shutdown his performance of Shutdown at this year’s BRIT Awards and picked up Best Songwriter and Best Contemporary Song at the 2017 Ivor Novello Awards.
Not only has Skepta been on the rise but Grime artist Stormzy has taken 2017 by storm with his breakthrough into mainstream success. His debut album ‘Gang Signs & Prayer’ hit No 1 on the Official Albums Chart and is now Gold-certified.
According to the report, other artists that have achieved top 10 albums in the last few years include Kano, Krept & Konan, Giggs, Bugzy Malone and Wiley among others. With JME’s Integrity also making a huge impact, by achieving a Silver album certification.
The report states that grime music has been outperforming the market with sales and streams of albums and tracks nearly doubling in the past year and a rise of consuming on streaming driven platforms. There has also been an increase in popularity of the genre as a whole among other music genres.
It is great to see a genre that has always been thriving on the underground music scene getting recognised by the official music bodies. Shout outs to all the artists achieving the success they deserve. Here is to the future success of Urban music.
