MERCURY PRIZE 2017 SHORTLIST
Last year we saw Skepta collect the Mercury Prize for his outstanding album Konnichiwa. Other notable artist that have won the award previously were Ms Dynamite, Dizzee Rascal and Speech Debelle. The 2017 Mercury prize shortlist has been revealed today and few familiar artist have been named.
It’s a good time for urban music as various forms have been represented in this years shortlist. From Stormzy’s chart topping album Gang Signs & Prayer which is heavily grime, rap and gospel influenced, Loyle Carner’s Yesterday’s Gone which has that authentic classic Hip Hop feel and J Hus’s Common Sense which sound is deep rooted in Afro bashment and UK Rap.
Sampha a vocalist who has worked with likes of superstar artist such as Drake and Kanye West is also on the shortlist for his album ‘Process’. Its good to see Sampha being recognised for his experimental style of R&B, a sound that I think needs to be heard much more.
The amount of nominees is a reflection of how well the scene is doing with it’s continued success in the mainstream. Therefore, It’s very important that artist from our scene keep being recognised amongst their peers and the industry for their achievements and impact they are having within British culture.
